Organisms Flashcards
What are the five characteristics that all living things have in common?
- All living things use energy.
- All living things will respond to their environment.
3.All living things are composed of cells. - All living things will be able to maintain homeostasis.
- All living things are able to grow and reproduce.
What are the basic requirements for being an organism?
Being alive and living.
What is a cell?
It is the basic unit of life. To be alive, something has to be made up of cells.
What is homeostasis?
An organism’s ability to maintain their internal environment.
What are the order of elements that make up an organism like a human?
- Atoms
- Molecules
- Cells
- Tissues
- Organs
- Organ Systems
What is an atom?
The basic unit of all living and non-living matter/chemicals.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms banded together/ a chemical compound.
What is an organ?
Part of an organism, composed of many tissues, that is typically self contained and has a specific vital function, such as the heart or liver in humans.
What is an organ system?
A group of organs that work together to perform one or more specific functions. For example, the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves make up the nervous system, and together receive, process, and transmit information.
What is an organism?
A single living thing. composed of one or more cells.
What is tissue?
Any of the distinct types of material of which animals and plants are made. Tissues are made of many specialized cells.
On what basis are organisms classified?
The basis of the characteristics they have in common.
What are the seven classes that organisms are known by?
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
All living things can be classified into 5 kingdoms, what are their names?
- Monera
- Protista
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
For example, what would be the seven classes for a panda?
Kingdom: Animalia
Phylum: Chordata
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Ursidae
Genus: Ailuropoda
Species: Melanoleuca
