Cytoplasm Flashcards
What is cytoplasm?
The jelly-like fluid part of the cell that fills the space between the plasma membrane and the nucleus, including all of the organelles. When you hear about the cytoplasm, that describes everything in the cell except for the nucleus.
What is cytosol?
The liquid found inside the cytoplasm that is mostly composed of water.
What is cytoplasm mostly made of?
Water.
What occurs in cytoplasm?
Many chemical reactions and processes. Several different ions and proteins dissolve in cytoplasm that help in these chemical processes.
What does cytoplasm contain?
Cell organelles, cytosol, and the cytoskeleton.
What is the cytoskeleton?
The protein structure contained in the cytoplasm that acts as the structure and support for the cell.
What are the three parts of the cytoskeleton?
- Microtubules
- Microfilaments
- Intermediate Filaments
What are microtubules?
The largest parts of the cytoskeleton. They move cell parts and help to organize the cell.
What are microfilaments?
Parts of the cytoskeleton that act to reinforce parts of the cell and help to anchor membrane proteins.
What are intermediate filaments?
Parts of the cytoskeleton that help to strengthen the cytoskeleton. They also help to anchor actin and myosin, which are an important part of muscle contractions.
