Cell Theory Flashcards
What are the three points of the cell theory?
- All organisms are made up of the cells
- Cells are the smallest units of life
- All cells are made up of preexisting cells
Do cells just spontaneously appear?
No. New cells are made from pre-existing cells, through either meiosis or mitosis.
What is cell theory?
A theory that states all things are made up of cells, cells are the smallest units of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells.
What is a cell?
The basic unit of life.
Can a part of a cell make another cell?
No, a part of a cell cannot make a whole; at least one whole cell is required to metabolize, maintain homeostasis, and reproduce.
What are the characteristics of cells?
- All cells have a plasma membrane.
- All cells have DNA.
- All cells have cytoplasm.
What is a plasma membrane?
The membrane that surrounds the outer body of the cell and controls what can enter and exit the cell.
What is DNA?
A large molecule that contains all of an organism’s genetic information. It allows the cell to function and reproduce.
What is cytoplasm?
The jelly like substance found inside of a cell which holds all other organelles.
