Homeostasis Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment.
Cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems all function together to maintain what?
Homeostasis.
Sensors, integrators, and effectors all work together to maintain what?
Homeostasis.
What do sensors do?
They pick up on anything that could negatively affect homeostasis.
What do integrators do?
They receive information from sensors and then tell the effector what to do to try and maintain homeostasis.
What do effectors do?
They do whatever the integrator tells them to do.
What are sensory receptors?
They are receptors located throughout your body that detect a stimulus.
What is an integrator?
Your brain is the integrator that senses a stimulus and determines an appropriate response.
What are effectors?
Muscles or glands that carry out the response designated by the integrator.
Homeostasis is maintained by what?
Negative or positive feedback
What is negative feedback?
A feedback mechanism that maintains homeostasis by reversing the change.
What is positive feedback?
A feedback mechanism that intensifies a detected change.
Which is more common, positive or negative feedback?
Negative is very common, while positive is rather rare.
