• functional structures- positions are grouped into departments based on similar expertise and resource use
• divisional structures- departments are grouped based on similar organisational outputs. The grouping together of people that work on the same product or process, serve similar customers or are located in the same geographical region. It includes product focused, geographically based, customer based or process based.
• matrix structures uses functional and divisional chains of command simultaneously in the same parts of the organisation. There are dual lines of authority running vertically and horizontally
• team structures- includes cross functional and permanent teams
• network structures- subcontract major functions to separate organisations and coordinates their activities from a small headquarters organisation. Can be viewed as a central hub surrounded by a network or outside specialists to whom major functions are outsourced.
