Organisation of the Nervous system Flashcards
Components of the CNS
Brain and Spinal Cord
2nd and 3rd order sensory neurons
amygdala
cerebral cortex
hippocampus
neurons of the corticospinal and spinothalamic tract
etc
briefly explain the pathway information takes through the brain to the body and back
Information travels from the cortex to the spinal cord segment, to the corresponding body part. It then travels back in reverse up to the thalamus in the cortex
what is significant about the spinal cord and information pathways?
Specific spinal cord segments connect different body parts to the spinal cord.
how do information pathways differ in the ANS?
In the autonomic nervous system, the pathways are similar however there is not much cognitive/conscious control.
what is the peripheral nervous system?
The peripheral nervous system is everything outside of the brain and spinal cord and includes the somatic (motor), autonomic, and enteric (gut) nervous systems.
3 parts of the peripheral nervous system
somatic - motor
autonomic
enteric - gut
give examples of the components of the peripheral NS
- Gamma and alpha motor neurons
- Nociceptors
- Postganglionic neurons of the ANS
- Dorsal root ganglion
- Neuromuscular junction
- Enteric NS
- 1st order sensory neurons
- Sympathetic chains
who demonstrated the complexity of the nervous system and how?
Harriet Cole demonstrated the complexity of the nervous system by laying out the nerves in an anatomical dissection.
what did Harriet Cole demonstrate?
the complexity of the nervous system by laying out the nerves in an anatomical dissection
what is a nerve?
lots of axons going together
how many neurons are there in the brain?
86 billion
how many glial cells are there in the brain?
86 billion
how many neuronal and non-neuronal cells are there all together in the brain?
172 billion (86 billion glial and 86 billion neurons)
what are glial cells?
non-neuronal cells
examples of glial cells
astrocytes
oligodendrocytes
Schwann cells
