Organisation Flashcards
What is a tissue
group of cells with a similar structure and function
What are organs
aggregations of tissues performing specific functions.
What are organ systems
Organs are organised into organ systems, which work together to form organisms e.g. digestive system
How do enzymes catalyse reactions
By lock and key method of enzyme fitting with substrates
Define the process of Digestion
large insoluble food –> small soluble food
What 2 purposes does Bile do
- Neutralises Ph
2. Emulsifies Fat
What does the Small Intestine do
absorb nutrients through villi, goes to liver by hepatic portal vein
How is the villi adapted for diffusion of nutrients
- inc. surface area through microvilli spikes on every villus
- Good Capillary Network so conc gradient
- One cell thick; short diffusion path
What does the villi contain
Lacteal (lymph) and Capillary network
What nutrients pass into the Lacteal (lymph)
Glycerol and Fatty Acids
What nutrients pass into the capillaries
Glucose and Amino Acids
Define Defecation
removing of solid waste from the body
What denatures Enzymes
going above optimum temp. and not in the right pH range
What is the lock and key hypothesis
the substrate shape is complimentary to the shape of the active site
What organs make amylase, protease and digestive enzymes respectivley
Salivary gland
Stomach
Small Intestine
