Organic Reaction Summary Flashcards
Combustion
OXIDATION
+ oxygen
carbon dioxide + water
Hydrogenation
(adding a hydo, hydrogen)
(So I need an extra bond!)
ADDITION - UNSATURATED TO SATURATED (I need to start with a double bond)
Alkene + H2 > Alkane.
Halogenation
(Adding a halo - halogen)
(I need an extra bond)
ADDITION - UNSATURATED TO SATURATED
Alkene + halide > Dihaloalkane
Hydration
(hydrating it, adding water)
ADDITION
Alkene + water > Alcohol
Hydrohalogenation
(adding - need an extra bond - extra space)
(hydrogen, halide)
Alkene + H(halogen) > haloalkane
Free Radical Halogenation
(it’s a free country but you have to work for what you want to buy - swapping for a halogen)
(A trade so no extra space, bond, is needed)
SUBSTITION
Alkane + Halide > haloalkane + H(halide)
HydrOLysis
(buying a shot - swapping something to get some alcohOL)
(H is not valuable enough, NaOH)
Substition
Haloalkane > Alcohol + NaX
Dehydration
(Eliminating water - you need an OH)
since you’re eliminating, you’d have an extra bond and water left
Elimination
Alcohol > Alkene + Water
Dehydrohalogenation
(since you’re taking something away, you’ll need hydrogen and halo - eliminate
you’d have an extra bond left)
Elimination
Haloalkane > alkene + H(halide)
Cracking
(Cracking a cookie into crumbs)
Elimination
(breaking up long alkanes into alkenes and smaller alkanes (useful compounds))
Alkane > Alkene + Alkane
Esterification (it’s in the name)
Condensation
Alcohol + Carbo
