IMFS and Bonding Flashcards
Intramolecular bond
A bond which occurs between atoms within molecules
Ionic Bond
A transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction
Metallic Bond
A bond between a positive kernel and a sea of delocalised electrons
Covalent bond
a sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms
Valency
The combining power of an atom to attract other atoms.
Intermolecular force
A weak force of attraction between discrete molecules, ions or atoms of noble gases.
Electronegativity
A measure of the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons.
Pure Covalent (Non-polar Covalent Bond)
A covalent bond that has an equal sharing of electrons.
Polar Covalent Bond
A covalent bond that has an unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming (as a result of electronegativity difference).
Dipole
The separation of charge over an atom or molecule.
Temporary Dipoles or Induced Dipoles
An atom or molecule in which a dipole forms momentarily.
Permanent Dipole
When a dipole is constantly present across the molecule.
Properties of an atom needed for a hydrogen bonding (FON)
- high electronegativity
- small atom
- at least one lone pair of electrons
