Nov 2020 UV Exam - Chemistry Definitions Flashcards
valence electrons
electrons found in the outermost, incomplete energy level and are able to participate in bonding.
lone pair
A valence electron pair that is not shared or bonded to another atom.
unpaired electron
An electron that occupies an orbital of an atom singly, rather than as part of an electron pair
intramolecular bond
a bond occuring between atoms within molecules
covalent bond
A sharing of at least one pair of electrons by two non-metal atoms.
valency
The combining power of an atom to attract other atoms.
molecular shape
The three - dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule.
Intermolecular force
A weak force of attraction between discrete molecules, ions or atoms of noble gases.
boiling point
The temperature at which the vapor pressure of a liquid equals the external pressure surrounding the liquid.
metallic bond
A bond that forms between a positive kernel and a sea of delocalised electrons.
ionic bonding
A transfer of electrons and subsequent electrostatic attraction.
Oxidation
The loss of electrons
reduction
The gaining of electrons
amount of substance
The number of discrete atomic-scale particles in a sample of matter
molar mass (M) (g.mol-1)
The mass in grams of one mole of that substance
