Momentum Flashcards
Momentum (p)
the product of the mass and velocity of the object.
Impulse (J)
The product of the net force and the contact time.
Definition for NII in terms of Momentum:
The net force acting on an object is equal to the rate of change of momentum.
Isolated system
A system that does not interact with its surroundings (that is, its total energy and mass stay constant). It has no net external forces acting on it.
The Law of Conservation of Linear Momentum:
The total linear momentum of an isolated system remains constant (is conserved).
Elastic collision
a collision between bodiesin which both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved.
Inelastic collision
a collision between bodies in which only momentum isconserved
