Organic molecules Protein Flashcards
What are proteins made up of?
Amino group and carboxyl group and a side chain/ R group
What type of bonds are between the a.a?
Peptide bonds
What is the primary structure?
The sequence of a.a that makes up the protein
What is the secondary structure?
When folding occurs making either Alpha helix or beta-pleated sheets that are held up by hydrogen bonds
What is the tertiary structure?
The amino acids with hydrophilic R groups are on the outside while Hydrophobic R groups are on the inside
What influences the folding in the tertiary structure?
The hydrogen / ionic /disulfide/van der Waals forces and many other interactions
What is the quaternary structure?
Consists of more than 1 polypeptide chain and are 2 tertiary structures bonded to make 1quaternary structure
What is hemoglobin made up of?
4 polypeptide chains (2 alpha and 2 beta)
What is a conjugated protein?
Protein and a nonprotein group
What are the 2 types of protein?
Globular and fibrous
What is a globular protein?
A globular protein is a type of protein that is functional, round and spherical, has an irregular a.a sequence and is sensitive to changes (is on the outer surface)
What is a fibrous protein?
A fibrous protein is a type of protein that is Structural, long and narrow, has a repetitive a.a sequence, and is less sensitive to changes (is on the inner surface)
What is the structure of collagen?
3 parallel polypeptide strands are joined to form a triple helix and are made up of 3 repetitive a.a sequences and are a fibrous protein
What are the 3 repetitive a.a sequences in collagen?
Proline glycine and hydroxyproline
What determines the 3d shape of a protein
The sequence of nitrogenous bases on the DNA and the position number and the type of bonds which determine the 3d shape of the protein with a specific active site
