Antihypertensives and Antioxidants Flashcards
What are antioxidants?
They inhibit oxidation because oxidation produces free radicals which may damage the cells of the organism
What are the types of antihypertensives?
Diuretics, Beta-blockers, Calcium channel inhibitors, sympathetic nerve inhibitors, ace inhibitors, statins, Plant stanols, and sterols
What are the types of anticoagulants?
Warfarin and aspirin
What are Diuretics?
They lower the blood pressure by lowering the volume of blood and increasing the volume of urine
What are beta-blockers?
They close and bind with the receptors on the heart mimicking adrenaline meaning that the heart will beat slower and with less force
What are the side effects of beta blockers?
Fatigue, weakness, dizziness, possible link to diabetes
What are calcium channel inhibitors?
They work on widening the blood vessels to decrease BP
What do sympathetic nerve inhibitors do?
They prevent the heart rate from increasing by preventing the message from coming from the CNS
What are ace inhibitors?
They lower the blood pressure and prevent the formation of angiotensin 2 which goes to the adrenal gland and makes the blood pressure high
What are the side effects of ace inhibitors?
Coughing, dizziness, heart arrhythmia
What are statins?
They are drugs that reduce cholesterol by inhibiting the enzyme made in the liver to synthesize cholesterol and they increase the number of LDL receptors
What are the benefits of statins?
Lowers blood cholesterol and the risk of CVD and the inflammation in the lining of arteries
What are the side effects of statins?
Nausea, liver damage, joint ache, depression
What are plant stanols?
They have a similar structure to cholesterol which they reduce the amount of cholesterol absorbed in the blood
What is warfarin?
They interfere with the manufacture of prothrombin in the body so no thrombin or fibrin is formed
