Organic Extra Flashcards
What is TMS
Used as the standard reference - gives a chemical shift value of 0ppm
Allows mapping of carbon and hydrogen - no need for chemical tests/destroying the molecule ; TMS is inert with hydrogen all in the same environment
Why are deuterated solvents used
Because 1H is replaced by heavy water : 2H - produces no NMR signal in the frequency ranges
What is most common solvent?
CDCl3 - still produces a peak in carbon-13 spectrum but it filters out this peak before displaying the spectrum
What do scientists do to identify OH/NH protons?
They have variable chemical shifts + not involved in spin-spin coupling ; small volume of d2o is added and the H atoms are replaced with Deuterium atoms - this will not absorb in this chemical shift range so the peak disappears
