Organic chemistry - paper 1 Flashcards
How are polymers made?
made by joining lots of molecules together in long chains
What are addition polymers made from?
unsaturated monomers
What are polymers?
substances of high average relative molecular mass made by joining up lots of repeating monomers
Explain monomers?
make up addition polymers and have double covalent bonds
How are polymer chains formed?
lots of unsaturated monomer molecules (alkenes) can open up their carbon- carbon double bonds and join together to form polymer chains - addition polymerisation
What is needed for an addition polymerisation reaction to take place
pressure and catalyst
What does ethene become in addition polymerisation?
poly(ethene)
What are most addition polymers?
inert - dont react easily
Why are most addition polymers inert?
becuase carbon-carbon bonds in polymer chain are very strong and arnt easily broken
addition polymers take a long time to ….
biodegrade. hard to get rid of so best thing is to reuse them
What are the alcohols functional group?
OH
What is the general formula?
CnH2n+2OH
What are the first four alcohols?
methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol
What can alcohols be oxidised to form?
carboxylic acids
What do you need to make carboxylic acids?
potassium dichromate (VI) in dilute sulfuric acid
