Organic Chemistry - hydrocarbons Flashcards
1
Q
Hydrocarbons
A
a compound that contains only hydrogen and carbon atoms
2
Q
Alkanes
A
A hydrocarbon that has no covalent bonds (aka. saturated). Formula = Cn H2n+2
3
Q
Alkenes
A
A hydrocarbon that has double covalent bonds (aka. unsaturated). Formula = Cn H2n
4
Q
My Eel Protects Big Potato Hotdogs
A
Meth Eth Prop But Pent Hex
5
Q
Boiling Point
A
The more carbon atoms, the higher the boiling point
6
Q
Isomers
A
Have the same atoms but different arrangement
7
Q
Alkane + Bromine
A
- a substitute reaction
- Requires UV light to separate the bromine so that they will have one free electron which makes it more reactive.
- e.x methane + bromine —> bromomethane + hydro bromide
8
Q
Alkene + Bromine
A
- an addition reaction
- does not require UV light
- ethene + bromine —-> 1,2- dibromoethane
