Gas Exchange - Humans Flashcards
Gas Exchange
diffusion of oxygen from the alveolar to the blood and diffusion of carbon dioxide from the blood to the alveolar.
Trachea
also known as wind pipe
Bronchi
Singular = bronchus
Pleural Cavity
the space between the two pleural membranes. It is filled with pleural fluid.
Diaphragm
when we inhale the diaphragm contracts and pulls down wards when we exhale the diaphragm relaxes and goes back up.
Pleural membranes
separates lungs from the ribs so that they don’t get damaged.
Rib Cage
Protects lungs and holds them in place. When inhaling it moves out and up, when exhaling it moves down and in.
Bronchi-oles
the air passages in the lungs
Cartilage rings
they are supports for the airway so that it can be kept open when we breathe.
Internal Intercostal Muscles
when inhaling they relax but when we exhale they contract and pull the ribcage in
External intercostal muscles
when inhaling they contract and pull the ribs out wards but while exhaling they relax.
Inhale
Volume of lungs increase so that the air pressure inside lungs decreases
Exhale
Volume of lungs decreases so that the air pressure inside increases
Alveoli (6)
- One cell thick wall
- also capillary wall is thin
- large SA
- Alveoli wall is moist
- Concentrations
