Organic chemistry -Ch22 Flashcards
What is a chloroalkene?
A compound in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms in an alkane molecule have been replaced by chlorine atoms.
How may alcohols be imagined as derived from alkanes?
By replacing a H atom by an -OH group. This group is called hydroxil.
What is a functional group?
An atom or group of atoms which is responsible for the characteristic properties of an organic ompound or a series of organic compounds.
How may alcohols be classified?
As primary, secondary or tertiary.
What is a primary alcohol?
One where the carbon atom joined to the -OH group is attached to only one other carbon atom.
Example of primary alcohol?
Ethanol
What is a secondary alcohol?
One where the carbon atom joined to the -OH group is attached to two other carbon atoms.
Example of secondary alcohol?
propan-2-ol
What is a tertiary alcohol?
One where the carbon atom joined to the -OH group is attached to three other carbon atoms.
Example of tertiary alcohol?
2-methylpropan-2-ol
Boiling points of alcohols?
Higher than corresponding alkanes.
Solubility in water of alcohols?
Methanol, ethanol and propan-1-ol are completely miscible with water
