Chemical equations - Ch6 Flashcards
Law of conservation of mass
The total mass of the products of a chemical reaction is the same as the total mass of the reactants.
Law of conservation of matter
In any chemical reaction, matter is neither created nor destroyed but merely changes from one form into another.
Sulfate / sulfite anion test
BaCl2 in both, white ppt, HCl, sulfite dissolves, sulfate stays.
Carbonate / Hydrogen carbonate anion test
HCl to both, fizzing, limewater = colourless –> milky white, MgSO4, carbonate white ppt, H.Carbonate no white ppt.
Chloride anion test
Silver nitrate, whit ppt, ammonia, ppt dissolves.
Nitrate ion (brown ring) anion test
Freshly prepared FeSO4, conc. H2SO4 slowly at angle, brown ring at junction of two layers.
Phosphate ion anion test
Ammonium molybdate, conc. nitric acid, heat, yellow ppt (ammonium phosphomolybdate).
