Organic chemistry Flashcards
Define photosynthesis
The process by which plants use sunlight, water and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy in the form of sugar (glucose)
State the difference between photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Photosynthesis is endothermic, while cellular respiration is endothermic releasing energy from glucose. They are opposites to each other
Write this in a word equation - photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight (energy) = C6H12O6 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water + sunlight = glucose + oxygen
State some features of organic molecules
- always contain carbon
- held together by strong covalent bonds
- large and complex in structure
- hydrophobic (insoluble in water)
- Made from living organisms
list these in order from 1-6
prop, eth, but, pent, hex, meth
meth, eth, prop, but, pent, hex
What is OH in naming organic compounds?
anol - OH - alcohol
What is C-C in naming organic compounds?
ane - alkane - single bonds
What is C=C in naming organic compounds?
ene - alkene - at least 1 double carbon bond
What is NH2 in naming organic compounds?
anamine - amine
What is COOH in naming organic compounds?
anoic acid - carboxylic acid
Hydrocarbons are insoluble in water because they are composed of non-polar molecules. Therefore hydrocarbons are ……
Hydrophobic
