Organic chemistry Flashcards
Combustion of the alkenes
Alkenes burn with a smokier yellow flame compared with alkanes because there is incomplete combustion.
Addition reaction of the alkenes
C=C bond more reactive than alkanes.
Alkene’s reactions with halogens
ethene + bromine = dibromoethane
Alkene’s reactions with hydrogen
Alkenes are unsaturated the C=C bond. With the addition of a H2 molecule the hydrocarbon become saturated. 60oC and a nickel catalyst.
Alkene’s reaction with water
Produces a alcohol.
Combustion of alcohols
produces carbon dioxide and water.
Reaction of sodium with alcohol
Hydrogen gas is produced.
sodium + ethanol = sodium ethoxide + hydrogen
Oxidation of alcohol
The oxygen atoms form an ethanoic acid. Ethanol + oxygen = ethanoic acid + water
What functional group do esters contain.
coo
CH3COOC2H5
carboxylic acid + alcohol
with acid catalyst = ester + water
