Biology Paper 2 Flashcards
What does insulin do?
Insulin is released from pancreas into the blood stream which causes glucose to move from the blood to liver and muscle cells where glucose is converted to glycogen to be stored.
What does glucagon do?
Secreted into the blood stream by the pancreas makes the liver convert glycogen to glucose to raise blood sugar levels.
What does the pituitary gland do/release?
Controls growth in children.
Simulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroxine to control the rate metabolism.
In women - stimulates the ovaries to produce and release eggs and make the female sex hormone oestrogen.
In men - stimulates the testes to produce sperm and make the male sex hormone testosterone.
What does the thyroid gland do/release?
Controls the metabolic rate of the body.
What does the pancreas gland do/release?
Controls the level of glucose in the blood.
What does the adrenal gland do/release?
Prepares the body for stressful situation - ‘fight or flight’ point of view.
What does the ovaries gland do/release?
controls the development of the female secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the menstrual cycle.
What does the testes gland do/release?
controls the development of the male secondary sexual characteristics and is involved in the production of sperm.
