Organelles Flashcards
Nucleus
Stores and protects DNA
Has 2 membranes
And has a nucleolus with in it
Rough ER
Has ribosomes embedded in it and builds proteins.
Smooth ER
Doesn’t have ribosomes and builds Lipids
Lysosomes
Break down non functions organelles in the cell so they can be disposed of
Vacuoles
“Vacuum” up stuff and store things with in a cell
Central Vacuole
In a plant cell and holds lots of water so the chloroplast can perform photosynthesis
Ribosomes
make protien
Golgi Apperatus
Packages compounds in vesicles to be shipped other places
Vesicles
are the vehicles of a cell, they move compounds around
Plasma membrane
a phospholipid bilayer that controls what comes in and out of the cell. Is hydorphobic therefore it will not disolve in water.
Organelles
Membrane bound structures with a specific job in the cell
Cytoplasm
The inside of the cell, contains a fluid called cytosol. Is thick and full of ions, molecules, and water.
Where do most chemical reactions take place within a cell?
The cytosol
What make ribosomes?
rRna
How do lysosomes breakdown things?
They are full of enzymes, and have an internal pH of 5, so they are acidic.
Mitocondria
Perform Cellular respiration to create ATP
Where is ATP made?
The Mitocondria
What is the energy currency for the cell?
ATP
Do all cells have the same amount of each organelle?
No, the concentration of each organelle depends on the function of the cell.
What are the main differences between a plant and animal cell?
Plants have a cell wall and chloroplast while animal cells have centrioles.
Why is the cytoskeleton important?
It allows organelles to move within the cell.
