Ch 4 Cellular Respiration Flashcards
What is the purpose of cellular respiration?
To produce ATP for the cell
What are the reactants in cellular respiration?
C6H12O6 and O2
What are the products of cellular respiration?
6H2O and 6C02
What must happen before the Krebs cycle can begin?
Glycolysis
What are the reactants of glycolysis
2 pyruvate
4ATP
2NADH
What does a cell need to do Glycolysis?
glucose (C6H12O6)
2 ATP
2NAD+
Is glycolysis an aerobic or anaerobic process?
Anaerobic
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic processes?
Anaerobic doesn’t need oxygen to happen
Aerobic needs Oxygen
What is the purpose of fermentation?
To provide NAD+ so glycolysis can continue?
Why does fermentation occur?
Because there isn’t enough oxygen present to enter the krebs cycle. So to keep some ATP production going the body continues doing glycolysis.
What are the reactants of the Krebs cycle?
Oxygen and Pyruvate
What are the products of the Krebs cycle?
NADH, FADH2, a few ATP, CO2 Release as waste
What are the reactants of the electron transport chain?
Oxygen NADH, FADH2
What are the products of the electron transport chain?
H20 released as waste and about 30 ATP
How many ATP total can be made under ideal conditions using just one molecule of glucose?
38
