Ch 5 Mitosis Flashcards
What are the 4 stages of mitosis?
Prophase
MetaPhase
Anaphase
Telephase
What is the purpose of mitosis?
To divide the nucleus and its’ contents
What occurs towards the end of mitosis to create 2 new cells.
Cytokenisis splits the cytoplasm
What happens during prophase?
The sister chromatids condense, the nuclear envelope dissolves and centreoles go to opposite sides of the cell.
The chromatids become visible under a light microscope.
What happens during metaphase?
The chromatids are aligned in the middle of the cell by spindle fibers.
What happens during anaphase?
The centromeres holding the sister chromatids together release and they are pulled to opposite sides of the cell
What happens during telephase?
the chromatids are now on opposides of the cell and a new nuclear envelope begins to form.
Where are sister chromatids joined together?
centromere
What is the purpose of telomeres?
They preven the loss of genes because a short section of dna is lost every time it is copied.
What are telomeres?
Repeating nucleotides that do not form genes, located at the ends of chromatids.
What is the difference between chromatin and chromatids.
Chromatin is loosely packed while chromatids are very tightly wound
What are histones?
a group of proteins that compact DNA
