Organ systems Flashcards
INTEGUMENTARY
SYSTEM
structure
- Skin, hair, sweat glands and nails
function
- provides protection
- regulates body temp
- excretes urea through perspiration
- generates Vit D
- senses pain, cold, temp, pressure
MUSCULAR SYSTEM
structure
- skeletal/ smooth/ cardiac
function
- movement + support
- maintain posture
- produce heat
SKELETAL SYSTEM
structure
- Bones, joints, cartilage, ligaments, and tendons.
function
- provide support and protection
- participate in movement + locomotion
- provides storage for minerals
- produces RBC
NERVOUS SYSTEM
structure
- CNS: Brain, spinal cord,
- PNS: spinal + cranial nerves
function
- receive, coordinate, and respond
- mainatin homeostasis
CARDIOVASCULAR
SYSTEM
structure
- Heart, blood vessels and blood.
function
- Pumps blood to distribute nutrients, gases, and hormones.
- Removes waste.
LYMPHATIC
SYSTEM
structure
- Lymphatic vessels, lymph, lymph nodes, lymphoid organs including
the spleen and tonsils etc
function
-collects excess tissue fluid from between cells and returns it to the CV system
- facilitates immune response through production and maturation of lymphocytes
- absorbs fat from the digestive system and transports it to the cardiovascular system
RESPIRATORY
SYSTEM
structure
- Nose pharynx, larynx trachea,
bronchi and bronchioles, lungs
and diaphragm
function
- Site of gas exchange in the body
- Oxygen is absorbed into the bloodstream, carbon dioxide
removed.
- Blood in constant supply of oxygen
ENDOCRINE
SYSTEM
structure
- Thyroid, pituitary, pancreas, adrenals, hypothalamus,
gonads, pineal
function
- Glands secrete hormones which regulate processes and maintain homeostasis
URINARY SYSTEM
structure-
- Kidney, ureters, bladder, urethra.
function
- Filters excess fluid and nutrients from the bloodstream.
- Maintain water and electrolyte balance
- Regulates pH balance of the blood.
REPRODUCTIVE
SYSTEM
structure
- Uterus, penis, ovaries and testes,
mammary glands
function
- Sperm and oocyte production
- Produces sex hormones.
- Produce offspring
DIGESTIVE
SYSTEM
structure
- Mouth, pharynx oesophagus,
stomach, small intestine, large
intestine, rectum, anus
function
- Break down food into units that can be absorbed and enter blood for nutrients - received by the cell.
- Indigestible food - eliminated as faeces.
