Antiseptic
substances used to prevent the presence of microorganisms or their toxic products within the bloodstream. Most common is 70% isopropyl. Safe for human skin
Disinfectants
remove or kill microorganisms on surfaces and instruments. Examples used in lab 10% Bleach solutions. NOT safe for human skin
Hand Sanitizer
an antiseptic alternative when hands are not visibly soiled.
General Blood Collection Equipment
Gauze pads, bandages, slides, pen, watch, Patient ID equipment, tourniquet, Needles
Needle Gauge
the bigger the gauge number the smaller the diameter and size of the needle. Most common needles are 20 to 23 gauge-needles
Bevel
the slanted cut of the venipuncture needle that pierces the vein
Shaft
The long cylindrical portion of the venipuncture needle
Hub
the end of the venipuncture needle that attaches to the blood collection device
Lumen
the internal space of the venipuncture needle
ETS
Evacuated Tube System. A closed system where the patient’s blood flows through a needle inserted into a vein without contamination
