what oral mucosa lesions would you refer to OM for opinion?
A
- Anything GDP thinks cancer/dysplasia
- Symptomatic lesion not responding to standard tx (SDCEP)
- Any BENIGN lesion that pt cant be persuaded is not cancer

What are some examples of tongue lesions?
A
- geographic tongue
- Black hairy tongue
- Fissured tongue

what are symptoms & cause of geographic tongue?
A
some are sensitive with acidic/spicy foods
intermittent
much worse in younger children
haematinic deficiency (B12, folate, iron)
parafunction trauma
dysaesthesia

what is glossitis and what investigations are needed?
A
smoothe tongue has a result of atrophy with some inflammation of the tongue.
due to deficiencies
fungal cultures & haematinics screen

when would you refer a swelling?
A
- symptomatic
- abnormal overlying & surrounding mucosa
- increasing in size
- rubbery consistency
- trauma from teeth

what sort of swellings would you not refer?
A
- Tori (bony projections on floor of mouth)
- Small polyps (oral skin tag)
- mucoceles
