Dysplasia & Oral Cancer 2 Flashcards
what are some examples of potentially malignant lesions?
White lesions (leukoplakia)
Red lesions (erythroplakia)
Lichen Planus:
- Candidal Leukoplakia
- Chronic Hyperplastic Candidiasis
what is the categorisation of dysplasia?
Low Grade
High Grade
Carcinoma-in-situ
what is low grade dysplasia on a histology slide?
- originates from squamous epithelium
- considerable amount of keratin production
- evidence of stratification (multiple layers)
- well formed basal cell layer surrounding tumour islands
what is high grade dysplasia on a histology slide?
- little resemblance to normal squamous epithelium
- CONSIDERABLE ATYPIA
- invade in noncohesive pattern with fine cords, small islands & single cells infiltrating widely through connective tissue
- Mitotic figures are prominent
what is a carncinoma in situ?
- cells look malignant BUT not invading surrounding tissues
- abnormal architecture
- mitotic abnormalities frequent
what are histological features of carcinomas?
- Pattern of invasion
- depth of invasion (how deep into tissues it grows)
- perineural invasion (around neural cells)
- Invasion of vessels
what can lip cancer present as clinically?
non healing ulcer/swelling on the lower lip
what is some of the main aetiology of lip cancer?
sunlight UV-B
smoking
if a GDP thinks that their patient is thought to have cancer, how long is the referral to the hospital?
2 weeks
