Oral Mucosa Flashcards
Histology of masticatory mucosa
Parakeratinised stratified squamous
Parakeratinised means the keratin layer is stratum corneum has nuclei even though normally keratin are all dead cells. This is because the keratin rate of deposition is too fast
Lining mucosa histology
Non keratinized stratified squamous
What layer in the epithelium does oral mucosa not have
Stratum lucidum because not thick skin
Difference in the lamina propria between lining and masticatory
Masticatory mucosa had thick lamina propria (mucoperiosteum)
Lining has loose lamina propria
Gustatory mucosa histology
Keratinized. Only present on dorsum of tongue
What constitutes the oral mucosa
Epithelia and lamina propria
What is present in masticatory mucosa to prevent lamina propria and epithelium from separating due to the chewing forces
Rete ridges/pegs and dermal papillae
Four types of papillae
Filiform (no taste buds)
Fungiform
Circumvalkate
Foliate
What are the different taste sensations at the different parts of the tongue
Sweet salty at the tip
Bitter at the back
Sour a at the sides
Where is junctional epithelium found and what does it do
Attached gingiva, attached gingiv to the cervical of the tooth
Four types of nerve receptors in the mouth
Pain, heat, cold, touch
Vermillion border
Junction between labial mucosa and the skin
Where is the Ventral surface of tongue
Underneath of the tongue.
It is highly vascularizwd, used for drug delivery
Junctional epithelium
Higher turnover rate, high metabolic activity and so has more rER, golgi, mitochondria.
Stratum basale cells contain hemidesmosomes for the attachment of cells to the salivary protein layer which covers the cervical area of enamel
Rugae found on where
Hard palate
Most common papillae and function
Filiform , facilitate mastication and movement of food
Fungiform papillae where
Top of tongue , mushroom shaped
Where is circumvalkate papillae found
V shaped at the posterior of tongue. Only 10-14 present
Name the gland associated with circumvallate papillae and what type of gland is it
Von Ebner gland
Serous gland
What do the glands associated with the papillae do?
Their function is to wash away substances so that new tastes can be recognised
Where are tastebuds found in the adult
Tongue soft palate epiglottis larynx and pharynx Oropharynx
Har palate don’t have
Nerves of taste buds
Anterior 2/3 - facial nerve
Posterior 1/3 - Glossopharyngeal nerve
Geographical tongue
No Filiform papillae
Irregular, smooth patches
Similar to psoriasis
No treatment needed usually
What is something keratinocytes have that Langerhans cells, melanocytes do not have
Tonofilaments and desmosomes
