Cementum Flashcards
Cementoblasts
Two types of cementum
Cellular and acellular
Primary cementum is what sort of cementum
Acellular
No cells
Where is acellular cementum located
Adjacent to dentine, on the laterals
Dark blobs in where is cellular cementum located
apical part of the root
Furcation
What is the function of cementum
Cover the root dentine
Attach the tooth via the PDL to alveolar bone
Can you find both cellular and acellular cementum in the same region?
Yes. Acellular is closer to the tooth, inside because it’s primary cementum
Primary vs secondary cementum
Primary formed first
Name of the collagen fibres from periodontal ligament in the acellular cementum
Sharpey’s fibres
What is the function of acellular extrinsic fibre cementum
Attachment of tooth to bone
Present on cervical 2/3 of roots
Name the cementum with no sharpey’s fibres
Cellular intrinsic fibre cementum
What’s the name of the cementum with no sharpey’s fibres
Cellular intrinsic fibre cementum
What is the special characteristics of CIFC?
No sharpey’s fibres
NO involvement in attachment on tooth to bone
Intrinsic collagen fibres run PARALLEL to surface
Histological classification of cementum
Connective tissue (mineralised with calcium)
Does cementum have blood vessels and nerves
No. Receive blood supply from adjacent PDL
The structure of cementum is similar to the compact bone. Both are composed of cells and mineralized extracellular matrix. But unlike bone, there are no Haversian canals, blood vessels, and nerves in the cementum.
