  1. Bacteria
  2. substrates (fermentable sugars and decrease O2)
  3. susceptibility
    bacteria produces acids which breakdown tooth tissues = erosion of dental tissues

Stages of tooth decay

A
  1. Enamel lesion = demineralization of enamel = chalky spots
  2. enamel decay = erosion of enamel = yellow discolouration
  3. dentine decay = dentine breakdown, bacteria gains access = cavitation
  4. pulp involvement = decay reaches pulp, infection can damage blood vessels and nerves
  5. Abscess decay = reaches root = increase infection and damage to bone
