Oral Health Flashcards
1
Q
Types of teeth
A
- enamel (outermost) and cementum (bottom, mineralised)
- Dentin (less mineralised)
- pulp (soft tissue, nerves and blood vessels)
2
Q
amount of teeth
A
4 - canines
8- incisors
8- premolars
12-molars
primary dentition - no premolars
3
Q
label tooth
A
4
Q
reasons dental caries occurs (tooth decay)
A
- Bacteria
- substrates (fermentable sugars and decrease O2)
- susceptibility
bacteria produces acids which breakdown tooth tissues = erosion of dental tissues
5
Q
Stages of tooth decay
A
- Enamel lesion = demineralization of enamel = chalky spots
- enamel decay = erosion of enamel = yellow discolouration
- dentine decay = dentine breakdown, bacteria gains access = cavitation
- pulp involvement = decay reaches pulp, infection can damage blood vessels and nerves
- Abscess decay = reaches root = increase infection and damage to bone
6
Q
types of periodontal
A
- gingivitis
- periodontitis
7
Q
what is gingivitis
A
- inflammed gums
- reversible
- not treated = periodontitis
8
Q
what is periodontitis
A
- gum loss = ligament destruction = loose tooth = infection
- not reversible
- associated with systemic complications
