changes in body system Flashcards
1
Q
GI system effects
A
- decrease tooth enamel
- decrease saliva = decrease bolus = breakdown carbs = decrease cleaning = decrease immunity
- decrease mucosa = decrease protection = decrease secretion = decrease nutrient breakdown and increase difficulty swallowing/decrease absorption
- decrease smooth muscle = decrease motility = dysphagia/ increase reflux and constipation/incontinence
2
Q
Cardiovascular effects
A
-Increase myocardial ischemia = decrease myocytes (muscle cells) and increase fibrosis
-Increase degeneration of valves
-Causes left ventricular hypertrophy (increase in size)
= decrease cardiac capacity = decrease ability to increase C.O as necessary and Decrease maximae HR
= exercise intolerance
3
Q
Blood vessels
A
- Decrease muscle mass and increase fibrosis = decrease compliance of blood vessels (increase stiffness)
- Endothelial dysfunction and degeneration + inflammation = decrease gas exchange
- Increase atherosclerosis
-Decrease compliance of blood vessels = Increase BP (systolic)
-Decrease ability to respond to blood pressure changes (homeostatic response) = orthostatic hypotension
