Oral Cavity or Mouth ( Alimentary Canal ) Flashcards
– Space between the lips and the teeth.
1. Labial Vestibule
2. Buccal Vestibule
Oral Vestibule
– between the lips and incisors
Labial Vestibule
– between the lips and the cheeks
Buccal Vestibule
- bounded rostrally by the lips, laterally by the cheeks, dorsally by the hard palate and ventrally by the tongue
- Lips
- Philtrum
- Cheeks
- Hard and Soft Palate
(5. Teeth)
Proper Oral Cavity
Rostrally
Lips
Laterally
Cheeks
Dorsally
Hard Palate
Ventrally
Tongue
– forms the rostral and most of the lateral external boundaries of the vestibule.
Lips
- a deep, straight, narrow cleft that marks the union of the two halves of the upper lip, anteriorly.
Philtrum
– forms the caudal portion of the lateral walls of the vestibular cavity
Cheeks
Hard and Soft Palate (has two major part)
1. Brachygnathia
2. Prognathia
Hard and Soft Palate
1. Palatine
2. Maxilla
3. Incisive Bones
Hard Palate
- brachydont in dogs and cats.
- fairly low in profile
Teeth
- portion of the teeth which is covered with cement and is embedded in the gum
Root
– the part of the tooth visible above the mucous membrane of the gum.
Crown
- the line junction of crown and root
Neck
- Mandible
- Incisive and Maxillary Bone
Dental arch
- Digestive Tract
This is the main pathway through which food travels:
1. Mouth (teeth, tongue, salivary glands)
2. Pharynx
3. Esophagus
4. Stomach
5. Small Intestine
Alimentary Canal (Digestive Tract)
- Includes the teeth, tongue, and salivary glands,
- responsible for mechanical digestion and saliva production.
Mouth
- Connects the mouth to the esophagus,
- serving as a passage for food and air.
- mouth to the esophagus
Pharynx
- A muscular tube that transports food from the pharynx to the stomach.
- pharynx to the stomach
Esophagus
- A muscular organ where chemical digestion occurs, primarily through gastric juices (acid and enzymes).
Stomach
-
Small Intestine – Composed of:
1.) Duodenum
2.) Jejunum
3.) Ileum
Small Intestine
– First section, where bile and pancreatic enzymes enter.
Duodenum
– Middle section, responsible for most nutrient absorption.
Jejunum
– Final section, absorbing remaining nutrients and connecting to the large intestine.
Ileum
-
Large Intestine – Includes:
1.) Cecum
2.) Colon
3.) Rectum
Large Intestine
– A small pouch with limited function in dogs.
Cecum
– Absorbs water and forms feces.
Colon
– Stores feces before elimination.
Rectum
- The exit point for waste elimination.
