  • 1st part of the alimentary canal
  • Divided into 3 regions:
    1. cervical
    2. thoracic
    3. abdominal (shortest)
  • Enter the abdominal cavity = esophageal hiatus
  • In medium-sized dogs it is approximately 30 cm long and 2 cm in diameter when it is collapsed.
  • Muscles: cricopharyngeus muscle and cardiac muscle
