Oral cavity Flashcards
the different parts of the oral cavity
- Oral vestibule
- oral cavity proper
- isthmus of fauces
borders of oral vestibule
- bounded ant. and laterally by the lips and cheeks
- post. and medial by the teeth and gums
- above and below by the reflections of the mucous from the lips and cheeks to the gyms
what is the oral cavity proper?
the space between the dental arches, limited posteriorly by the isthmus of fauces
what are the borders of the oral cavity
- sup. (ant).hard palate, (post.) soft palate
- inf. muscular roof of the oral cavity, mylohyiod, and the 2 geniohyoid
- lat. teeth arches, cheeks formed by the buccinator m. and mucosa
- post. isthmus of fauces
- ant. lips
what are the borders of the isthmus of fauces?
- sup. soft palate
- inf. root of tongue
- lat. palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches
what is the mentolabial fold?
a groove from the chin to the lip
what is the nasolabial fold?
a groove from the upper lip to the external nose
what is the philtrum?
a groove that extends downwards from the nose over the midline of the upper lip
what does the palate make up and it is composed of?
- the floor of nasal cavity and the roof of the oral cavity
- composed of a hard and soft palate
the hard palate…
- makes up 2/3 of the of the palate anteriorly,
- composed of the palatine process and the horizontal plates of palatine bones
- has 3 foramina’s
what are the 3 foramens in the hard palate?
- incisive fossa (2 foramens) contains nasopalatine nerves and incisive papilla
- greater palatine foramen has the grater palatin vessels and nerves
- lesser palatine contains the lesser palatine vein, nerves
the soft palate….
makes up 1/3 of the palate and has 4 parts
ant- attached to the hard palate by the tendon of tensor veli palatini
post- contains the muscular palate
mid- uvula
lat- continues with the wall of the pharynx by palatoglossal and palatopharyngeal arches
muscles of the soft palate
- tensor veli palatini (inn by a branch of the trigeminal)
- levator veli palatini
- palatoglossus
- palatopharyngeus
- muscular uvulae (inn by vagus n.)
- ** the rest is innervated by the glossopharyngeal n. (IV)
arteriole supply of the soft palate?
- greater palatine a.
- branch of descending palatine a.
- lesser palatine a.
innervation of the soft palate?
- greater palatine nerve
- naso palatine nerve
- lesser palatine nerve
function of the salivary glands
- secretion of saliva which:
- lubricates food and start of starch digestion,
- prevents tooth decay,
- keeps mucosa membrane moist
features of the parotid gland?
- purely serious
- largest, with tough fascial capsule called the parotid sheath
where does the parotid gland lay?
inferior the the external acoustic meatus, behind the rammus of the mandible and infront of the styloid process
the parotid duct of stensons
passes horizontally and at the ant. border of the masseter muscle and it pierves the buccinator muscle to open behind the 2nd maxillary molar into the oral cavity
structures within the parotid gland
- parotid plxus of facial nerve branch
- reotromandibular vein
- external carotid artery and a branch which supply the gland
- auriculotemporal nerve
- parotid lymph node
the submandibular gland….
- mostly serious
- bondy of the mandible duct is 5 cm long between mylohyoid and hyglossus muscle passing from lateral to medial,
- opens on a sublingual papillae
- supplied by the submental a. and vein
the sunlingual gland….
- mostly mucous
- lies on the floor of the mouth between the mandible and genioglossus muscle, both glands unite to form a horse shoe shape under the lingual frenulum
what is the arterial supply of the sublingual gland?
- sublingual a.
- submental a.
borders of the parotid nest?
ant- mandible, masseter and medial pterygoid
post- external acoustic meatus cartilage, mastoid process, sternocleido mastoid, digastric m. (post)
med-styloid process, its muscles and int. jugular vein
innervated by the glossopharyngeal
