Oral cavity Flashcards
2 regions of the oral cavity
Oral vestibule: region between dental arches and the lips and cheeks
Oral cavity proper: lies within the confines of the teeth
Walls of the Oral Cavity
Sides: Buccinator
attaches from pterygomandibular raphe and inserts with orbicularis oris onto lips
Floor: two suprahyoid muscles
Mylohyoid (Lateral)
Geniohyoid (medial)
what is the hard palate
separates oral cavity from nasal cavity
Formed by
- Palatine process of maxilla
- Horizontal plate of palatine bone
what is the soft palate
Soft palate - continuation of hard palate, acts as a valve
what does the tensor veli palatini do
tense soft palate during swallow
what does the Palatoglossus muscle do
draws soft palate toward tongue.
Expired air passes through nose
what does the levator veli palanti do
elevate soft palate during yawn and swallow.
what does musculus uvula muscle do
shorten and retract uvula
what does palatopharyngeus muscle do
tense soft palate and elevate pharynx during shallow
tongue extrinsic muscle
Hyoglossus -
Genioglossus -
Styloglossus -
Palatoglossus -
Hyoglossus - tongue muscle
from hyoid bone - depress side of tongue (CN XII)
Genioglossus - tongue muscle
from mandible - protrudes tongue and depresses centre
Styloglossus - tongue muscle
from styloid process - elevates and retracts tongue
what are the extrinsic muscles innervated by
Extrinsic muscles innervated by hypoglossal nerve, except palatoglossus – vagus
what are the intrinsic muscles innervated by
All innervated by cranial nerve XII - Hypoglossal
