what do mydriatics do?
DILATE the eyes
what is the therapeautic use of mydriatics?
diagnostic procedure, treatment of eye disease EXCEPT GLAUCOMA (b/c increased intraocular pressure), for eye exams and prior to cataract surgery; TO REVERSE CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITOR OVERDOSE
examples of mydriatics
atropine sulfate (atropisol, Isopto, Atropine); NOT FOR USE FOR GLAUCOMA AND TACHYCARDIA PTS
common s/e of mydriatics
whitening of eye lid and around; stings for a short time (so alleviate anxiety b/c it will subside); redness, flushing face, warm sensation to skin, irritability or sweating.
mydriatic atropine sulfate is contraindicated for
GLAUCOMA AND TACHYCARDIA PTS
adrenergic mydriatic contraindicated for pts with
dysrhythmia and atherosclerosis
reportable s/s of mydriatics
blurred/lost sight, dyspnea, diaphoresis, flushing
Atropine toxicity s/s
blind as a bat; dry mouth; constipation; fever; tachycardia; confusion; hallucination; delirium; coma
