OPS 028 Radiation Flashcards
1
Q
Safety Critical
Operational Considerations:
IC to DRA giving consideration to:-
A
- Radiation monitoring (EPD) Rados Survey meter
- Early Informative
- Site appliances upwind initially 45m away
- What is the degree of urgency?
- PPE levels, Fire Kit, BA & EPD’s
- Consider LLGTS or PRPS (but will slow down personnel = more time in risk area.
- Police CIRT team
- Do not commit crews until sufficient resources available
- Use SSRI, all known premises should have a current 7 (2)d
2
Q
Safety Critical
Operational Considerations:
Early in formative should contain:
A
- Radiation suspected followed by radiation involved
- sealed
- strength of source
- shielded or unshielded
- physical state - gas, solid, liquid
- location and description
- Type of emitter - alpha, beta, gamma
3
Q
Safety Critical
Operational Considerations:
IC’s should seek advice from:-
A
- On site specialists
- NAIR/RADSAFE via control
- Bureau Veritas - (HFRS Radiation protection advisor RPA)
4
Q
Safety Critical
Operational Considerations:
External Radiation - in order to protect personnel use the following methods:-
A
- Time - keep exposure time as short ass possible
- Distance - keep as far away as possible
- Shielding - shield body from source
- Exposure to any dose must be minimised using the maxim (ALARP)
- Any recorded absorbed dose must be detailed on HFRS 73
5
Q
Safety Critical
Operational Considerations:
How to prevent the intake of radioactive material:
A
- Inhalation - use BA
- Ingestion - do not eat/drink/smoke at incident
- Cuts/grazes - withdraw from the area
- any person who is suspected of having received internal exposure must be seen by a qualified physician.
6
Q
Safety Critical
Operational Considerations:
Decontamination methods following exposure at a radiation incident:-
A
- sealed source - Decon not required if intact
- unsealed source - Full Decon
- Emergency. -Wet Decon (contain run off)
