Traffic cones used to identify safety zone. Personnel should not proceed beyond the safety zone.

Explain the verge side working procedure:-

• park appliance 20m from rear of the incident on hard shoulder in fend off
• All FF to work from the verge side, if possible on the safe side of any crash barrier.
• Avoid working with backs to traffic
• 2nd appliance to communicate with IC to adopt required fend off.
• if FF to work on the hard shoulder then the 2m safety zone should be used and lane 1 closed.

• Verge side working to be used when closing down the incident.
• Traffic not to be allowed to pass on either side of an incident.
• Full PPE to be worn
• Dismount on the safe side of the appliance
• Do not deal with the incident from the unaffected carriageway.
• Do not block lanes unnecessarily
