Some said Khrushchev inherited a decaying empire, the focus on eliminating the cult of Stalin and peaceful coexistence with the west diverted his plans to fully overcome production problems.

A

With the revival of the intelligentsia and the educational reforms, intelligentsia opposition began to develop, students and professors were more exposed to western ideas of freedom and democracy and began to question communist ideology.

A

Khrushchev retired as party leader owing to ill health, in reality, his policies had turned many in the party against him and they planned to remove him.

How was Khrushchev removed?

A

Whilst he was holidaying in the Crimean, Brezhnev and Kosygin developed a plot to overthrow him, he was ordered to return home and resign. With the entire central committee calling for his resignation, he was forced to go.

  1. Army generals who were unhappy with him cutting the size of the army and his handling of the Cuban missile crisis. 2. People in the party who were unhappy wit his decentralization schemes. 3. Many were unhappy with his domestic and foreign policy failures, their unease over his leadership was deepened by the Cuban missile crisis and harvest of 1963.

A
