Ophthalmology Flashcards
What is the Palpebral Fissure
The opening between the eyelids
What is the Sclera
White part of the eye
What is the DETAILED definition of the sclera
Opaque membrane covering the eyeball. Maintains the size and form of the bulb and attaches to muscles that move the bulb
What is the general definition of the conjunctiva
A clear mucous membrane, either bulbar or palpebral
What is the bulbar conjunctiva
Transparent membrane that covers the sclera of the anterior third of the eye. It meets the cornea at the limbus
What is the palpebral conjunctiva
Membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids
What are the eyelids
Upper and lower eyelids bilaterally
What are the tarsal plates
Firm strips of connective tissue within each eyelid. Gives structure and also allows you to invert the lid when searching for a foreign body in the eye.
Meibomian Glands
Sebaceous glands that secrete from their ducts on the posterior margin of each eyelid.
What is the pupil
A circular opening in the iris of the eye. It lies behind the anterior chamber of the eye and the cornea and it is anterior to the lens. Pupil opening changes size in response to the changes in light.
What is the cornea
The convex, transparent, anterior part of the eye. It allows light to pass through it to the lens. It is a fibrous structure comprised of five layers. It projects like a dome beyond the sclera.
What is the limbus
Where the sclera and the cornea meet.
What is the iris
circular, contractile disc. Muscle fibers in the iris contract and relax to allow more or less light to enter the eye through the pupil. The iris divides the space between the lens and the cornea into an anterior and posterior chamber. The pigment of the iris determines eye “color” - blue eyes, brown eyes, etc.
Lens
Lies behind the cornea. Primary function of the lens is to focus the visual image on the retinal photoreceptors. It does so by changing its shape
Ciliary body
control the thickness of the lens
