How do you operationalise the independent and dependent variables?

You define what you mean for testing purposes. Eg if your theory states that alcohol slows people down. Beer would be IV and reaction time would be DV. 2 pints of 5% beer would be an operationalised IV and time taken in seconds would be operationalised DV
