Experimental Design Flashcards
What is a repeated groups design?
You have one group of participants and they have to do both conditions
What is an independent groups design?
Where you split the participants into two groups- one group for each condition
What is a matched groups design?
Having participants in the two conditions who are similar, but only in respects to the research
What are the advantages of an independent groups design?
1 not effected by order effects, because they’re only in one condition
2 demand characteristics reduced, because they’re only seeing one side of IV
What are the disadvantages of an independent groups design?
May be affected by participant variables- people have different abilities so some might be better at the tasks than others
What are the advantages of a repeated groups design?
1 less participants are needed
2 won’t be affected by participant variables
What are the disadvantages of a repeated groups design?
1 affected by order effects- they’ve practiced the task so they may perform better in the second condition
2 affected by demand characteristics- they’ve seen both sides of IV and could guess what’s going on and then help or hinder the research
What are the advantages of a matched groups design?
1 not affected by order effects
2 demand characteristics are reduced
What are the disadvantages of a matched groups design?
1 costly and time consuming
2 because of the cost it is only used when participant variables are an issue
3 if one person drops out then you lose two participants
4 participant variables, because no two people are the same
In the repeated groups design, how do reduce order effects through counterbalancing?
Counterbalancing is where you split the group in half. One half does the first condition first and the second half does the first condition last to prevent order effects
