Operating Emergency Vehicles Flashcards
Factors that lead to collisions
Overconfident , not recognizing the situation, sense of false security, not knowing app capabilities, lack of knowledge.
Percent of injury and death occur while responding
20-25 percent
How long to wait for oil pressure to rise once app is started
5-10 sec
If not holding pressure shut rig down immediately.
Gear and rpm selection.
Gear should allow you to keep up with traffic while allowing for acceleration if needed
Rpm- 200-300 lower than max recommendation to prolong engine life
Idle rpm to warm up engine in cold weather.
900-1,100
Cool down time for engine before shut off
3-5 minutes
Key points to as driving
Attitude, safety conscious, do not demand right of way, yield to avoid collision. Take advantage of openings
Seatbelt exceptions
Pt care, loading hose, training tillerman
Loading hose while driving
Safety officer to have visual with loader and verbal with D/O
Warning method when backing with no warning device
2 horn blasts
Safe crossing intersection rules
Slow to a speed capable of stopping
Complete stop for blind intersections
Eye contact with other drivers if possible
Visual lead time while driving
10 sec ahead on residential
20 ahead on highway
Stopping distance
Drivers reaction time + total stopping distance
Main cause of skids
# 1Driver error - too fast, no anticipating, inappropriate brake use Mechanical too high tire inflation
Front brake limiting system
Slippery road/ dry road button
Reduced air pressure by %50 to front suspension
Older rigs rarely used today
ATC
Automatic traction control
Adjust engine speed and pressure to air brake system
Give more torque to traction wheels
Stopping distance in snow and ice
3-15x longer to stop
Automatic snow chain limitations
Will not work in 8in or more of snow
Slow speeds
Reverse
Interaxle differential lock
Allows for each axle to work at different speeds to increase traction
Audible device distances
40 mph 300 ft
50 possible to outrun audible device
60 mph 12 ft
Distance between multiple responding vehicles
300-500 ft
Preemption devices
Strobe light emitters
- if not automatic with parking brake. Must turn off when on scene
- white light show signal received.
- microphone - audible device on traffic light.
- white light on signal will indicate signal received blue if another vehicle activated other direction first.
