Operant Conditioning (4B) Flashcards
What is the role of the learner in classical conditioning?
Passive
What is the role of the learner in operant conditioning?
Active
What is the nature of the response in classical conditioning?
Reflexive or unconscious
What is the nature of the response in operant conditioning?
Voluntary
What is the antecedent?
In operant conditioning
It is the environmental stimulus that precedes the relevant behaviour and indicates the response of the consequence.
For example seeing a petrol gauge nearly empty.
What is the behaviour?
In operant conditioning
Voluntary activity that has an effect on the environment.
For example filling the car with petrol.
What are the three stages in operant conditioning?
Antecedent
Behaviour
Consequence (reinforcement or punishment)
What is the consequence?
In operant conditioning
Environmental effect that follows the behaviour.
Eg avoiding running out of petrol
What type of consequence is avoiding running out of petrol?
In operant conditioning
Negative reinforcement because you are removing the unpleasant stimulus.
What type of consequence is being given a bag of lollies?
In operant conditioning
Positive reinforcement as you are receiving a pleasant stimulus.
What type of consequence is being told to do the dishes?
In operant conditioning
Positive punishment because you are presented with an unpleasant stimulus.
What type of consequence is being told that you can’t go to the movies with your friends?
In operant conditioning
A negative punishment as the pleasant stimulus is being removed.
What is positive reinforcement?
In operant conditioning
Receiving a pleasant stimulus.
What is negative reinforcement?
In operant conditioning
An unpleasant stimulus being removed.
What is positive punishment?
In operant conditioning
Presentation of an unpleasant stimulus.
