Observational Learning (4C) Flashcards
What is observational learning?
The acquisition of information, skills of behaviour through watching the performance of others. It is considered a social cognitive model.
What are the five processes of the model?
Attention
Retention
Reproduction
Motivation
Reinforcement
What is attention?
In observational learning
The first stage.
The learner must actively watch the model’s behaviour.
What is retention?
In observational learning
The second stage.
The learner must make a mental representation and remember the behaviour for future use.
What is reproduction?
In observational learning
The third stage.
The learner must have the physical and mental capabilities to reproduce the observed behaviour.
What is motivation?
In observational learning
The fourth stage.
The learner must want/have the desire to reproduce the behaviour for learning.
This desire can be intrinsic or extrinsic.
What is reinforcement?
In observational learning
The fifth and final stage.
If the learner receives a desirable consequence for the behaviour they are more likely to reproduce the behaviour in the future.
