OPERANT CONDITIONING Flashcards
Operant Conditioning theorists believe that?
Behaviour is increased through reinforcement and diminished by punishment.
Give 2 examples of Operant Conditioning
-Rewarding a dog for sitting on command.
-Giving students detention for breaking the rules.
List the ABC’s of Skinner’s ABC model
-Antecedent
-Behaviour
-Consequence
What is the Antecedent in Skinner’s ABC model
Is the stimulus that triggers the desired behaviour.
What is the Behaviour in Skinner’s ABC model
Is the desired action/s made by the animal.
What is the Consequence in Skinner’s ABC model
Is the reward or punishment received for the behaviour.
For example, when teaching a puppy to sit what are the steps or example for each of Skinner’s ABC model
-Antecedent: your verbal request to “sit”
-Behaviour: the puppy sits
-Consequence: you reward it with a treat
Strengthening behaviour can occur through to 2 forms name them
-Positive reinforcement
-Negative reinforcement
What is Positive reinforcement
Addition of positive stimulus (reward)
Eg. Money, giving a pet a treat
What is Negative reinforcement
Removal of negative stimulus
Eg. Getting out of doing chores, using Panadol, using sunscreen
A Positive Reinforcement =
+ good behavior
A Positive Punishment =
+ bad behavior
A Negative Reinforcement =
– bad behavior
A Negative Punishment =
-good behavior
What reason made Skinner need to make his ABC’s model
Skinner found that a number of factors were needed in order for the behaviours to occur consistently.
