Opener's Rebid to a 1 level Response Flashcards

1
Q

O’s Rebid to a 1-level response:

When R responds to O’s opening bid, how does O analyze R’s 1 level response? In other words, what 2 types of 1 level responses are there to an Openers 1 of a suit opening?

A

Possible 1 Level Responses from R
1 ) One of a new suit .
2) One NT response

1 ) One of new suit: R couldn’t support O’s opening suit but has 6 or more HCPs. R is proposing a different suit in which to find a Magic 8 Card Fit. R only promises to have 4 of the suit.

2 ) One NT Response. R couldn’t support O’s opening suit but has 7 to 10 HCPs. R couldn’t find another suit to bid at the one level so defaulted to a 1 NT response.

Q
  • O makes a 1 of a suit Opening
  • R makes a 1 of another suit response

What should Opener consider when making their second bid?

A

R’s response was a Forcing bid since it’s a new suit.
R has 4+ cards in the suit.
R has 6 to 10 points.

  • If O has the 4+ cards for a Fit, O will raise R’s suit
  • O’s bid will be Limiting - it will show how many points O has

If Opener cannot support R’s new suit, O must find another 2nd bid since R’s response was Forcing.

Q

O’s Rebid to a 1 NT response:

What is R promising to O by making a1 NT response?

A

By making a 1 NT response to O’s opening bid
R is promising that:

1 ) R has between 6 and 10 HCPs.
2 ) R couldn’t bid any suit at the 1 level
3) R couldn’t support O’s opening bid

O becomes the Captain and can decide if they can make a game in 3 NT (requiring 25 Pts)

Q
  • O opens with a suit
  • R supports O with a raise to the 2 level in that suit

When would O use a Jump Shift in response to R’s 1 level response?

A

If R responded to O’s opening bid, R must have at least 6 to 10 points. If O has a strong hand (18-19 pts) the total of their point is at least 24 (good enough for a 3 bid). O’s rebid will be a Jump shift

Q

What are the 5 questions in order of priority that O asks himself in considering his rebid?

A

1 ) Can I raise my partner’s new Major?
{Still looking for Magic 8 Card Fit}
2 ) Can I bid a new suit at the 1 level?
{Or make a Jump Shift with sufficient points}
3 ) Is my hand balanced?
{ This leads to a NT strategy}
4 ) Should I bid a new suit at the 2 level?

Q

What is the highest priority when Opener is formulating their rebid in response to their partners first response?

A

Can I support the Major that the Responder proposed (if in fact R did respond with a Major)? R could have had 4 of the Major so O must have at least 4 of that suit to support it. O should factor in Dummy points when calculating the level of their response.

A
  • R has 4 or more of the bid suit
  • R has 6 or more HCPs
  • This is a Forcing bid: O must make a follow-up bid
