2C Opening Bids Flashcards
What does a 2C opening bid indicate? (2 possible meainings)
A 2C Opening bid indicates either:
- a non-balanced hand of 22+ points or
- a strong playing hand that can take 9 or more tricks
Is a 2C opening bid Forcing?
Yes. If O opens 2C then R must respond.
2C is a completely artificial bid and probably has nothing to do with clubs.
How do you open bidding with 20 or 21 points and a Balanced hand?
2NT
How do you open bidding with 22+ points and a Balanced hand?
Bid 2C and then 2NT at the next opportunity.
How do you open bidding with 18 or 19 points and a Balanced hand?
Bid 1 of a suit and then 2NT
What does a hand that merits a ‘Positive Response’ to a 2C opening bid look like?
- 8 or more points
- a ‘good’ 5 card suit. (top 2 of 3 honours or a 6+ card suit with some honours)
O opens 2C: R has a hand suitable for a ‘Positive Response’ in a Major. What would that hand look like and what would R’s bid be?
To make a Positive Response to a 2C opening in a Major, R must have:
- 8 or more points and
- a good 5 card suit (top 2 of 3 honours)
R would bid 2 of the appropriate Major.
O opens 2C: R has a hand suitable for a ‘Positive Response’ in a Minor. What would that hand look like and what would R’s bid be?
To make a Positive Response to a 2C opening in a Minor, R must have:
- 8 or more points and
- a good 5 card suit (top 2 of 3 honours)
R would bid 3 of the appropriate Minor.
(it has to be 3 because 2C was taken up to make the original bid and 2D for the Waiting bid)
If R can’t make a ‘Positive Response’ to O’s opening 2C bid, what bid should R make?
2D (the Waiting bid}
O : 2C
R : 2D
O has 5+ of a Major. What should he bid?
With 5+ of a Major,
O should bid that Major at the 2 Level.
O’s bid is Forcing on R
O : 2C
R : 2D
O has 5+ of a Minor. What should he bid?
With 5+ of a Minor,
O should bid that Minor at the 3 Level.
{ The 2 level is reserved for the Strong 2C bid and the Waiting 2D bids)
O’s bid is Forcing on R
O : 2C
R : 2D
O has 22 to 24 points and a balanced hand.
What should he bid?
With a balanced hand and 22 to 24 points:
O should bid 2 NT.
With this tight point range, R will know if he has enough points to get to 3NT (requires 25 pts).
O’s 2NT is not Forcing on R. R can pass if he doesn’t have points.
O : 2C
R : 2D
O has 25 to 27 points and a balanced hand.
What should he bid?
With a balanced hand and 25 to 27 points:
O should bid Game in NT.
3NT.
3NT is not Forcing on R
O : 2C
R : 2H
What does this chain of bids mean for Opener’s next bid?
O : 2C { O shows 22+ points)
R : 2H { R has 5+ H and at least 8 points}
{ R has made a Positive response. Bidding is
Forcing to Game level}
1) If O has 3+ card support for H -> O bids 3H
{ Partnership has found a suit. Now they can investigate slam}
2) If O doesn’t have support for H -> O bids 2NT
O : 2C
R : 2 in a Major or 3 in a Minor
Is R’s bid a Sign-off, Invitational, Forcing for one round, Forcing to Game level?
Forcing to Game
If R responds with a suit to a 2C opening, the partnership is forced to continue bidding till they reach Game level.
